Massivit to show new 10000-G 3D printer

Massivit has introduced a new G variation to the Massivit 10000 3D printer that it announced back in May of this year, allowing both models to make their public debut at this week’s Formnext show in Germany.

Massivit’s new 10000-G will work with both Cast in Motion approach and its Dimangel photo polymer materials.

Massivit itself started off with its 1800 series that was primarily designed for printing large display objects, and was widely used to produce advertising and later for props for film and theatre sets. The company followed this up with a variation, the 5000, with higher definition printing that was more suitable for industrial manufacturing. 

The 10000-series printers have been designed for producing moulds for composite manufacturing. All of these machines use the same large printer chassis with its 1.8m high build chamber and as such are ideally suited for making large objects. The 10000-series use Massivit’s Cast In Motion approach instead of the UV-curable Dimangel gel that the older models use. Cast in Motion involves 3D-printing an outer sacrificial shell with a DIM WB water-breakable gel, and then adding into that shell the CIM 500 material, which is a thermoset epoxy that has high mechanical and thermal properties. The entire item is then immersed in plain water, which causes the sacrificial shell to disintegrate, leaving the mould ready to use.

The 10000-G builds on this by also adding the ability to use Massivit’s Dimengel photo polymer materials that have until now been used with the company’s existing printers, now referred to as its Gel Dispensing Printing product line. The advantage is that the 10000-G can also be used to produce prototypes as well as for manufacturing via moulding. The 10000-G also enables tooling applications for thermoforming, resin transfer moulding, and reaction injection moulding. The Dimengel materials also offer flame retardancy.

In addition, Massivit 3D will also launch a new thermoset photo polymer material, Dimengel 400, at Formnext. Essentially, this is a stronger material that’s said to be suitable for production of large, strong and stiff end parts as well as functional prototypes, jigs and fixtures. It’s said to have good mechanical properties including double the impact resistance of the existing Dimengel materials, as well as a high Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT), enabling production of large parts that can withstand higher temperatures. Dimengel 400 will be available with both of the company’s production lines.

In particular, the composite manufacturing arena is steeped in labor-intensive and costly processes that are long overdue for innovation.” He added: “Our aim is to facilitate far more efficient processes using industrial-grade materials to maximize the true potential of composite materials.”
