Heidelberg launches electromobility subsidiary

Last month Heidelberg spun off its wallbox division into a separate subsidiary, Heidelberg Amperfied, as it seeks to grow its automotive electric charging business. The aim is for Amperfied to become a technology leader as the world moves away from the internal combustion engine, giving Heidelberg a slice of a very large pie.

Heidelberg Amperfied aims to become a technology leader in the fast growing e-vehicle charging market.

Heidelberg has been involved in the electric vehicle market since 2014 and has sold over 130,000 of its wallbox units since then. The company now has five production lines at its Wiesloch-Walldorf site and plans to raise the staff numbers from the current level of around 100. 

Dr. Ludwin Monz, CEO of Heidelberg, explained: “The identification and expansion of new business fields is absolutely in focus for Heidelberg. With the success of the Heidelberg charging solutions, we are clearly demonstrating how we can open up a new business area through technology transfer and achieve a very good market position in a short time.”

Amperfied plans to introduce a new generation of smart wallboxes in Autumn this year. This will allow for a family of networkable charging systems, under the brand Amperfied Wallbox Connect, with an app to control the new wallboxes and to determine when and how the e-car should be charged, as well as starting and stopping the charging and setting the level of charging. The charging can be authorised directly at the charging station via RFID and it’s also possible to connect to a home energy management system.

Amperfied is now planning a strategic cooperation with Intelligent Energy System Services GmbH. This company, which is also known as IE2S, is a joint venture of MHP Management and IT Consulting (MHP) – MHP is majority owned by Porsche – together with the transmission system operator TransnetBW. The idea is that Amperfied will supply the charging stations while IE2S takes care of the servicing and management. 

Both companies are assuming that the company fleet market represents a huge opportunity as those companies switch over to electric cars. These users will need solutions for controlling the charging power of the fleet vehicles as well as the way the power is generated and consumed. An integrated control system should help them reduce grid connection costs and power prices and so on. Further potential can also be exploited by integrating electricity generators and storage systems.

Amperfied and IE2S plan to jointly present a fully comprehensive offer for fleet electrification, from initial planning to installation and maintenance. In addition, they will develop a comprehensive service covering all aspects of full operation. As a first step, both companies will define an overall package for efficient fleet management and then tackle joint projects. The focus will be on small and medium-sized companies that are setting up or expanding an electric fleet.

IE2S already has a business partnership with Hitachi Energy for the further development of intelligent resource-efficient systems. For its part, Amperfied is also working with SAP to allow for operation, monitoring, and billing via cloud software. This is an important step towards being able to automatically manage the charging stations and the business processes involved in billing, invoicing, and payment.

As well as electric car fleet management, Heidelberg Amperfied is also planning to target home energy management, parking garages, residential complexes, and municipalities. If nothing else, this offers guys a fascinating insight into how Heidelberg is diversifying away from its core press manufacturing. business.
