Zund introduces Q-Line cutting system

Zund has shown off a new digital cutting system, the Q-Line with BHS180, which has been designed to work alongside automated loading and unloading units for higher productivity for both display graphics and packaging applications.

The new Q-Line cutter is built on a concrete substructure for stability and with beams made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic, to combine low weight and strength. It uses a linear drive system that can accelerate at up to 2.1g and the system can run at up to 2.8m/sec. Jobs are processed via QR codes, which allows processing a variety of different jobs in the stack. 

For now, the Q-series all come with a 3.2m long table but there’s a choice of three width. The Q 32-32 D has a working width of 3.2m, while the Q 22-32 D is 2.2m wide and the Q 18-32 D is 1.8m wide. They will take boards from 0.9 up to 65mm thick. 

As with the existing D-series, the new Q-series cutters use dual beams for increased productivity. Each beam has four modules for holding different types of tools. There are two standard Automo E modules plus one Automo L, which provides a creasing pressure of up to 50 kg and is mainly meant for use with creasing tools. The fourth module is a fixed InCam sensor module to capture registration marks, QR codes, and material edges.

There’s an automatic tool-changing system, the ToMaC Tool Management Client, which digitally links the tools with presets to save time in setup and tool changes. The tool magazines have seven slots and the system can pick up the tools needed automatically with no manual intervention needed.

Amongst the tools is Unito, for use with centered and off-centered drag knives for materials up to 5 mm thick, plus Elosto, which is available in two different variations for cutting operations requiring electric motor-driven oscillation. There is a series of Creto tools for taking crease wheels of different types and diameters, as well as Perto for perforating wheels and DrawTo for marking and drawing on a wide range of materials.

The boards can be delivered on a pallet up to 1800mm in height. The BHS180 board feeder has an integrated UnderCam camera that picks up location of the image printed on the board and can compensate for any distortions in the print to match the cut to the print. With every scan, the software adjusts the cut paths to the printed image, on the fly and in real time, reducing the cycle time for each job. 

As the boards are fed onto the table, sensors detect the position of the edges of the material. If the board is not within tolerance, the board feeder grabs the board once more and realigns it so that it can be fed onto the cutter without interruption. There are redesigned suction cups to separate the boards, which can be individually adjusted for different materials. 

After cutting, different jobs are stacked slightly offset so that they can be distinguished and taken off for any further processing. Any faulty boards are also set aside with an offset and can easily be detected as the pallet is removed.

The Q-series come with the latest Zünd Cut Center 4.0 operating software complete with a touch screen and joystick for manually moving the module carrier as well as a hand held scanner for tool management. Zund has also developed a cloud-based service, Zünd Connect, for production monitoring and analytics. This includes information such as cutter performance data and the cause of any interruptions.
