Stratasys demonstrates packaging prototyping

Stratasys has developed a packaging solution for its GrabCAD Print software to help designers create packaging prototypes using full colour 3D printers complete with integrated 2D graphics and labels. It will mean that designers can go from having an idea on their screen’s to a full-colour prototype in their hands in under a day.

Stratasys packaging solutions software can simulate prototypes complete with their graphic designs.

This software will work with the J8 Prime, J7 Series and J55 Prime series 3D printers, all of which use PolyJet printing. This method involves laying down a liquid photopolymer onto a build tray to build up an object one layer at a time. This then cures to a smooth surface, capable of holding plenty of detail, including simulated surface textures.

There are different materials available to simulate clear, flexible and rigid materials. This includes the VeroUltra materials that can print in over 640,000 unique colours, and simulate realistic textures like fabric and wood, as well create glass or plastic-like transparency with smooth colour gradients. This could, for example, include printing simulated glass bottles complete with a simulated label with sharp text and images that meet 2D graphics labeling standards. The technology can even simulate products or fillings, like cosmetics, makeup or liquids for realistic rapid prototyping.

Shamir Shoham, vice president of design for Stratasys, commented: “Novelty is key in packaging, so designers want to create something that will allow their product to catch the consumer’s eye.” He added: “With the ability to print glass and plastic-like transparency with high-contrast, sharp, bright graphics plus the ability to simulate liquid filling, designers are delivering realistic packaging prototypes that lead to earlier marketing assets as well as better and faster decision making by stakeholders.”
