Omet unveils X7 flexo press

Omet showed off a brand new flexo press, the Xflex X7, at this year’s Label Expo, held last week in Brussels, Belgium. This press is aimed at the shrink sleeve and flexible packaging printing market.

Omet’s Xflex X7 combines an X6 flexo press with a high value rotogravure unit.

The X7 is a mid-range 670mm wide flexo press though it also features a new High Value Rotogravure (HVR) Print Unit. Essentially Omet has added elements of its Varyflex V2 packaging press on to the chassis of an Xflex X6. It’s designed for high quality printing over medium run lengths. It can print to various substrates from 12 microns thick. 

Amerigo Manzini, director of R&D at Omet, says that the High Value Rotogravure will disrupt the way printers achieve the special print effects on shrink sleeves and flexible packaging materials.

The X7 also uses a Zero Gears Solution that includes nine servo motors on each printing unit to automate settings for printing pressures, automatic on the fly pre-registration and Omet’s patented MultiVision registration camera that allows for fast setup times with near zero wastage.

Marco Calcagni, sales director for Omet, demonstrated how the print units slide out so that operators have complete access, making the machine fairly easy to work with. Customers can choose between water-based, solvent or UV inks, with the machine on the stand being fitted with both conventional and LED cassettes from GEW that can easily be swapped over. The press also features a Soft Touch Vertical Flexo Station that allows printers to work with soft touch applications with both water and solvent based inks. 

Calgani says that the aim is for the press to be suitable for short run packaging, long run labelling and for shrink sleeves applications. It costs £1-1.5m, with Calcagni confident that Omet’s customer base of mainly small and family-owned converters would adopt it, saying that it’s flexibility would allow them to save money.

Omet has also worked with Ritrama and Spilker to develop a laminating module that can handle Core Linerless Solution or CLS film, which is said to be of particular interest to brands and converters in the food & beverage, home, and personal care industries. CLS is a self-adhesive film that can be used on a single ply Linerless web and laid down with a special linerless module. 

Omet has developed a module that separates the material and laminates the siliconized liner onto the face stock, with less thickness than traditional labels but enough stiffness to allow for high speed printing. Spilker has added a micro-perforation module so that there’s no need for die cutting. 

Omet also showed off its entry-level iFlex in an 8-colour UV LED configuration, complete with a new cold foiling system that’s said to minimize the amount of wastage. Omet also showed the latest XJet hybrid that combines an Omet flexo chassis with Durst inkjet engine – in this case the new Tau RSCi. This also gained a new rotary die cutting unit.
