GIS to support KM1024a heads

Global Inkjet Systems, which is best known for developing drive electronics, is now supporting two further industrial printheads from Konica Minolta, the KM1024a SHE and KM1024a LHG-RC with drive electronics and software in response to customer demand.

GIS has developed a new ethernet head management board, together with a new Analogue head board, to drive Konica Minolta’s 1024a series of analogue printheads.

GIS already supports the existing KM1024i digital printhead series. The KM1024a heads use an analogue waveform, which according to Konica Minolta, enables improved drop accuracy. They are lightweight compact heads that are mechanically compatible with their digital counterparts so that they can be dropped in as a replacement. The main difference is that they feature a different nozzle plate material for higher scratch resistance and benefit from a different production method to optimise the drop velocity for individual nozzles. 

Both of these heads offer 360npi resolution with a 72mm print width. The KM1024aSHE is capable of delivering 6pl binary droplets at 40kHz or 20pl greyscale at 22kHz and is compatible with solvent, oil, and UV inks. It’s mainly aimed at uses such as sign and display as well as printed circuit boards.

The KM1024aLHG-RC includes recirculation at the nozzle plate. It can produce drop sizes from 27pl binary up to 240pl in greyscale with eight drops combined. It’s said to be suitable for high-laydown applications such as ceramics, textile, opaque white, varnish printing and materials deposition coatings. The KM1024aLHG-RC is also compatible with solvent, oil, UV, and aqueous inks.

Whereas GIS used its USB platform to drive the KM1024i series, the company opted to support these analogue printheads on its Ethernet platform through the GIS HMB-DG2 Ethernet Head Management Board, and a new GIS Analogue Head Board (AHB), the AHB-KM-1024a. This involved adding arbitrary analogue waveform generation and high-performance amplifiers to drive the nozzle banks. Since linear amplifiers dissipate more power than digital drive electronics, the PCB design has been optimised to simplify cooling requirements in customers’ machines.

The GIS HMB-DG2 / AHB-KM-1024a configuration has a flexible design and can drive up to two of the KM1024aSHE or LHG-RC printheads. It comes with an option to add up to two further stackable daughter boards so that in total this combination can support up to six printhead connections. In addition, multiple HMBs can be used together to support larger systems. The HMB-DG2 includes print data management, waveform control and printhead diagnostics, which can all be accessed over Ethernet.
