EOS adds NickelAlloy

EOS has introduced a new 3D metal material, NickelAlloy IN939, for use with its M290 metal 3D printer. This is a nickel-chromium alloy that’s said to offer greater tensile properties, validation, reliability, and crack-resistance than similar materials currently on the market.

EOS claims that it gives a good balance between strength in high-temperature settings, resistance to corrosion and oxidation, fatigue performance, and creep strength at temperatures up to 850ºC. It offers ultimate tensile strength of 1510 MPa, with a yield strength of 1115 MPa, with a degree of elongation, breaking at 12 percent. The power particles range from 20 to 55 microns in size.

Ideally, parts produced using EOS NickelAlloy IN939 should be hardened after being manufactured by applying precipitation-hardening heat treatments. EOS has developed a 3-step heat treatment that takes14 hours at 1190ºC, which results in similar or better properties than the commonly used 4-step heat treatment of 50 hours at temperature.

According to EOS, it’s suitable for manufacturing parts for industrial gas turbines, such as vanes, blades, heatshields, as well as microturbines, turbochargers, power industry parts and other energy industry applications exposed to high temperatures and extreme elements. 

Kevin Minet, team supervisor for EOS metal materials and processes, explains: “Material development is always driven by customer demand and very often is the result of a close customer cooperation. EOS NickelAlloy IN939 was developed to meet or even exceed the properties of casted nickel alloy.”

In this case, the material was developed for Power Systems Mfg, or PSM, which supplies  aftermarket parts to a comprehensive Gas Turbine services provider providing services worldwide. Dr Alex Hoffs, president of PSM, commented: “For gas turbine power plant operators, we believe flow path components additively manufactured with new advanced metal powder alloys such as EOS NickelAlloy IN939 bring the potential for significant operational flexibility improvements.”

It’s currently available for use with the M290 but Eos is planning to extend this for use with its M400-4 platform in the next couple of months. You can find further details from eos.info.
