Under Amour partners Alvanon for apparel software

Alvanon, which specializes in creating dress forms to help clothing companies produce garments in the optimum size and fit, has worked with Under Armour, which makes sportswear, to develop 3D visualization tools for more accurate sizing of clothing.

Alvanon has worked with UnderArmour to develop virtual avatars for garment fitting.

The idea behind this is to do more product development work in software to reduce the cost of using physical samples and get to market quicker. Thus Alvanon created a set of 3D virtual avatars that mimic Under Armour’s physical fit forms which represent the full spectrum of “real” bodies across men’s, women’s and kids.

Jami Dunbar, Under Armour’s vice president of apparel, accessories development and supply chain operations, explained: “When we fit product on fit forms across the size scale, it does not always follow a mathematical equation of traditional grading.” These avators use proprietary fitting from Under Armour.

Alvanon has developed a Body Platform, which allows brands and retailers to access and share their 3D fit and core body standards with supply chain partners. 

Dunbar says that 3D previews are changing the industry as more retailers use this technology, adding: “And the beautiful thing about it is that there’s a great deal of collaboration across brands. Everyone protects their IP, but we all know working together is the way forward, and the way we’re all going to be able to visualize and make great product.”
