New materials from Henkel for Nexa 3D

Nexa3D, which makes 3D printers, has expanded its partnership with Henkel, a chemicals company that also produces materials for 3D printing, leading to three new photopolymer materials. These can be used to produce bottles and packaging, amongst other things. 

These bottles were 3D-printed using the new xPP405-Clear material.

Nexa3D has developed two different types of 3D printers. These materials are for the NXE400, a stereolithography printer that uses UV light to cure resins. The company also makes the QLS350, an SLS printer for producing thermoplastic parts, as well as post-processing machines and software. 

These new photopolymers are based on Henkel’s Loctite technology, and include xPP405, available in both black and clear. They offer a similar stiffness to polypropylene and can be stretched 130 percent before failure. They exhibit good UV weathering stability according to testing under ASTM G154. In addition, xPP405-Black is described as a tough semi-rigid material with high-strength engineering plastic delivering good impact resistance with performance similar to unfilled propylene. It has an industrial black finish and is suitable for manufacturing end use parts for piping, consumer and industrial applications, including large housings and enclosures and sheet metal forming dies.

It’s transparent sibling, xPP405-Clear combines clarity, toughness and impact strength with good heat deflection temperature between 50 – 60ºC. This is suitable for manufacturing of end use parts including packaging, bottling, piping and see-through elements such as transparent materials for light guiding applications and micro-fluidics as well as lighting applications. 

The third of these new materials is xPEEK147-Black, said to be a tough material with a good surface finish, and a strong dimensional stability featuring high heat deflection temperature. It is suitable for production tooling, molding applications and a variety of functional end use parts including automotive underhood applications. It offers high temperature resistance of up to 230°C with very high stiffness and is shown to be thermally stable for long periods with good solvent resistance and dimensional stability.
