HP launches 108 TIJ solution

HP has officially announced its 108mm Thermal Inkjet Bulk Printing Solution, which I have previously covered when it was shown as a prototype at last year’s Interpack show.

As the name suggests, it prints a 108mm swathe, which is more than double the 45mm print width of the existing HP 45. The printhead produces a 7pl native drop size and has a native resolution of 2400 dpi. It can run at 180mpm at 600 x 1200 dpi resolution with one colour. It can also be configured with two colour channels but the speed halves.

It’s mainly aimed at various packaging applications, including secondary coding and marking, late-stage packaging, wide-swath mail addressing, and specialty packaging. It will print to porous substrates such as corrugated and plain paper. It offers much higher print quality than was previously available, which allows printing of 1D and 2D barcodes as well as text, at high speed. 

Philippe Lesage, VP and GM, Specialty Printing & Technology Solutions at HP, commented: “We are excited to offer our customers new ways to navigate an increasingly complex packaging landscape with our growing portfolio of TIJ-enabled solutions.”

The imprinting module includes the ink supply and the drive electronics. The printhead has built in pressure regulation, which allows for a longer throw distance of up to 10mm and also means that it can be used vertically or horizontally. It benefits from a patented micro recirculation technology that reduces pen servicing while resolving decap issues, so that it can be used if left uncapped for 24 to 48 hours. The system also allows the installation of two bulk supply systems with auto switching, enabling supplies to be automatically switched when depleted.

HP says that parts can be replaced at low costs, and that the bulk ink cartridges also help lower the cost per print. Any potential users will need to do some work to integrate these units but HP offers a development kit that allows the head to talk to other things, as well as some technical consultancy.

Pat Harnett, Director of Portfolio, Strategy & Development for HP’s Specialty Printing & Technology Solutions, explained: “The HP 108mm Printhead has been specifically designed to accelerate overall design time and market readiness for OEMs. OEMs can easily integrate the Printhead to their systems and configure it for the application with the simplified enabler kit from HP.” 

He added: “The Printhead and the Ink cartridge can be replaced in minutes without operator training. This allows our customer base to take advantage of continuous printing, reduced downtime, and more seamless production to help offset rising labor and material costs.”
