Dyndrite partners with Xaar and Meteor

Dyndrite, which has developed workflow software for additive manufacturing, has teamed up with Xaar and Meteor Inkjet to develop solutions for 3D printing using binder jetting with inkjet printheads.

Dyndrite has partnered with Xaar and Meteor Inkjet to offer more integrated solutions for 3D printer developers.

The binder jetting concept is an established approach used by a number of 3D printer vendors. As with almost all 3D printing, objects are built up one layer at a time. In this case, the 3D printer lays down the build material in powder form and then uses an inkjet printhead to jet a binder solution on the powder, tracing the pattern of the layer in hand. The process is repeated until the object is complete. 

For this partnership, Xaar is providing the printheads with Meteor offering a RIP and flexible software Digital Front End tailored to the specific requirements of additive manufacturing. 

Dyndrite is interesting as the company has developed an Accelerated Computation Engine that uses the Graphics Processing Unit rather than the CPU in a computer to convert a 3D CAD model into bitmaps that a 3D printer can read. Bitmaps allow for much higher fidelity than the more conventional approach of using G-code but require much more processing power. By using the GPU, Dyndrite can take advantage of commonly available graphics cards to accelerate that process. This Dyndrite engine is offered as an SDK that can be used with either C/C++ and Python interfaces to create a hyper-scalable, geometry-agnostic set of fast digital manufacturing software tools. The first such solution to come to market was the HP Universal Build Manager Powered by Dyndrite.

Additionally, through an integrated Python API, Dyndrite can automate data workflows. The company also offers toolpathing APIs for advanced parameter control at the voxel level using grayscale and RGB colour-based metadata, anisotropic compensation routines, image manipulation and the streamlined handling of large images as slices. 

Harshil Goel, Dyndrite’s CEO, commented “With Dyndrite, 3D printing can occur at the resolution of the machine, at scale, with automated workflows – creating opportunities for true advancement and innovation in additive.”

This arrangement with Xaar and Meteor moves Dyndrite into a whole new area, beyond simply providing software tools and instead into the tricky integration that’s necessary to actually build a machine, and which trips up so many developers.

Clive Ayling, managing director of Meteor, points out that developing and implementing industrial inkjet systems can be difficult, noting: “Rather than being distracted by the intricacies of inkjet technology, print system builders can quickly leverage the integration work done by Meteor, Xaar and Dyndrite to radically simplify the path from development through to production, significantly reducing time-to-market and risk.”
