The unfortunate demise of City Link over the Christmas break should remind us as to just how dependent the digital economy, including printers and photographers, is on fulfilment. All too often companies treat the delivery of their products as a minor add-on to be outsourced to the lowest possible bidder.
But that shiny new press and its amazing print quality alone will not ensure repeat business. Rather the ability to get the product to the customer should be treated as an intrinsic part of its production. That means picking the best, not just the cheapest, partners such as couriers. Unfortunately, City Link’s customers, which probably includes a number of printers, will be learning this lesson the hard way this week.

You can license the articles from Printing and Manufacturing Journal to reproduce in other publications. I generally charge around £150 per article but I’m open to discussing this for each title, particularly for publishers that want to use multiple stories.
