MakerBot adds PETG to materials portfolio

MakerBot, a subsidiary of Stratasys that mainly makes desktop 3D printers, has released its first speciality material to its offering for its Method printer with the introduction of polyethylene terephthalate glycol, better known as PETG.

MakerBot has introduced its first speciality material, PRTG, for its Method 3D Printer.

PETG is a much more advanced material than the more standard PLA and ABS materials, offering greater strength and flexibility. It has a heat deflection temperature of up to 70°C and strong layer adhesion designed to reduce shrinkage and warping during printing. PETG is resistant to moisture and many chemicals, including some alkali and acidic substances. It can be used with the Method printer’s water-soluble PVA for complex parts and effortless support removal. It doesn’t emit an odour when printing and prints with a glossy finish as well as having a good degree of ductility.

The Method printer is aimed at a more professional market than MakerBot’s other 3D printer, the Replicator, which is primarily sold to the education market. The Method is an FDM printer with dual extruders and boasting 0.2mm accuracy. It has a build volume of 19 x 19 x 19.6cm and flow rate of around 50 cubic mm/sec. It can produce layers from 20 to 400 microns. It costs just over £5000.

MakerBot is planning to introduce other Speciality Materials for this printer. However, these materials may require further workflow steps. Thus PETG, for example, needs an adhesion stick to be added to the build plate prior to printing.

There’s already a range of Precision Materials available for the Method printer, which include MakerBot Tough, MakerBot PLA, and MakerBot PVA. These materials are said to be suitable for uses such as prototyping, jigs and fixtures, and end-use parts.

Nadav Goshen, CEO of MakerBot, says that customers have been asking for materials that offer high strength and durability, adding: “PETG is one of the most widely used polymers today. Because of its advanced properties and versatility, we view PETG as an excellent material to be used on the manufacturing line and for short-run production runs.”
