Happiness in a bottle
Coca-Cola has been forced to drop its #MakeItHappy campaign after Gawker subverted it by creating a bot to tweet excerpts from Hitler’s Mein Kampf diatribe, which in turn tricked the Coke bot into repeating the text in the form of soppy pictures. Coca Cola pointed out that the Internet is awash with negativity and claimed that its campaign was an attempt to spread more positive messages. Understandably, Coca Cola was somewhat miffed by Gawker’s response.
Then again, the Internet is also awash with pointless marketing messages, which are just contributing to the sense of negativity. So an advertising campaign designed to sell more sugary drinks was never destined to find much favour online. But at least I got a laugh out of Gawker’s antics so Coke can take solace knowing that it made me and countless others feel happy!
