DuPont releases several new 3D print materials

DuPont has added a number of new plastic filaments and pellets to its range of 3D printing materials, which are said to offer a choice of hardnesses, fibre reinforcement options and colours.

Dupont has developed a number of materials for 3D printing, including the Hytrel TPC-ET used to print this branched duct.

Thus there are two new glass reinforced grades, Zytel 3D12G30PT and Zytel 3D12G50PT, which respectively offer 30 percent and 50 percent glass fibre reinforcement both available as black pellets. Glass reinforced materials offer a balance of strength and stiffness as well as ultra-low shrinkage and warpage for strong, rigid, functional parts. These materials also promise good heat and chemical resistance and lower moisture absorption than PA6 copolyamide, so that there’s less variability during printing.

There is also a new 20 percent carbon fiber-reinforced grade – Zytel 3D10C20PT – also available as black pellets. The carbon fibre-reinforced grades are lighter and stronger so they’re more suitable for structural applications in aerospace and automotive uses. These offer good surface finish, an HDT greater than 150°C and excellent chemical resistance.

Dupont has also introduced a new unreinforced Zytel polyamide grade, 3D1000PT Pellets, which is suitable  for functional 3D printed parts that require good aesthetics and elongation combined with low friction properties. These materials deliver strength and stiffness, good thermal properties (an HDT greater than 100°C) and low shrinkage.

Dupont also announced several new additions to its Hytrel TPC-ET copolyester, which are aimed at extrusion-based types of 3D printers. This is a semi-crystalline material that combines the flexibility of rubber with the strength and processability of thermoplastics. They offer good heat and chemical resistance, strength, resilience and durability. These materials are also good for flexible parts due to their low shrinkage, as well as injection moulding.

Thus there is a new Hytrel 3D4100 in both 60 shore and 40 shore D grades, both available in a choice of black filaments or natural pellet. 

Christophe Paulo, strategic marketer for DuPont’s EMEA operation, noted that the industry was looking for higher volume and lower costs, adding: “By delivering our products as pellets as well as filaments, DuPont gives customers the flexibility to use the same material across different processes. For instance, they can create prototypes with fused layer modeling and final parts with pellet extrusion modeling – or even injection molding for very high volumes – while maintaining consistent properties. The addition of pelletized materials to our offering supports the trend toward mass customization using 3D printing.”
