New photo lab from Epson

Epson is to launch a new photolab at the Photography Show, which takes place at the NEC from 1-4th March 2014. The SureLab D7 Studio can be used either on the shop floor as a self-service order terminal or as a production microlab behind-the-counter. 

It includes a self-service, touch screen order terminal and up to two printers. A further three extensions can be added, increasing the number of printers linked to the terminal, up to a total of eight. These can be used simultaneously, all controlled by the 22-inch multi-touch screen. 

Its LED light panel can be tailored to match customers’ store colour themes and its multi-touch panel can display digital advertising of the customers’ choice. It accepts memory cards, USB sticks, CD/DVD and has Bluetooth connectivity, and can take images from smartphones/tablets as well as services such as Facebook.

The D700 print units use an Epson micropiezo inkjet printhead with Epson’s UltraChrome D6-S ink and can print to paper-based matte, glossy and lustre media. It takes roll media, from 10cm up to 21cm and can print lengths up to 100cm, from a 65m roll. Epson says that it will produce an 8x12ins print in 30 seconds or around 360 4x6ins prints per hour. Resolution ranges from 720x360dpi in its fastest mode up to 1440x720dpi for the highest quality.

GWG aids photography workflow

The Ghent Workgroup, which is best known for developing PDF workflow standards for print production, has now turned its attention to digital photography, with new specifications available to download free of charge. These are based on those of GWG member association Medibel+, and give photographers and publishers a compact set of digital photography guidelines for print production.
There are two versions available: “News Photography”, for newspaper production; and “Shootings”, for magazine and studio-quality production. GWG recommends using these guidelines with digital photography projects for print production. Doing so will insure correct implementation of ICC colour management and standards, which are essential to maintaining maximum quality from original capture through to the final, printed result.
The specifications include: ‘How-to’ screenshots compatible with the latest version of Adobe Photoshop; “Shoot-Optimise-Save” function reorganized to better match photographer set-up process when using Adobe Photoshop; Image delivery now directed to recipients’ online portals; more detailed IPTC information/fields, added after user requests.
The Ghent Workgroup, formed in June 2002, is an international assembly of industry associations and suppliers from across Europe and the United States. The Ghent Workgroup’s objective is to establish and disseminate process specifications for best practices in graphic arts workflows.
