BCN3D updates Epsilon 3D printer

BCN3D has introduced a new version of its Epsilon desktop 3D printer with a number of improvements although the basic specifications remain the same.

The Epsilon, which was first launched in 2020, was designed as a desktop industrial device. It uses the Fused Filament Fabrication approach. It has since been used in a variety of applications including 3D printing tools, jigs and fixtures. As before, there are two models with the W27 having a build area of 420 x 300 x 220 mm while the larger W50 has a build area of 420 x 300 x 400 mm. These printers have a fully enclosed passively heated chamber with temperatures up to 60ºC and a heated bed of up to 120ºC that allows them to work with with technical materials. These include plastics, composites and metal filaments, developed by BASF and Mitsubishi Chemical.

The new Epsilon gains automatic XYZ calibration, which is said to reduce the printing set-up time by 85 percent, down from 40 minutes to six and ensuring that the first layer adheres properly. This calibration process works by measuring multiple points to automatically adjust both the printing surface height and the offset between both nozzles.

Where the printer has been fitted with the Independent Dual Extrusion System (IDEX), which is typically used for printing multiple materials, it’s necessary to account for the XY alignment of the two toolheads. For this reason there’s a small square opening at the back of the printing surface, which the toolheads use to touch the sides with the hotends in order to calculate their positioning on both the left and right axes and then to calibrate the right offsets between them. This XY alignment avoids any crossovers or shifting layers when printing in dual mode.

There’s now an internal web server with a local IP address so that users can send files, monitor, pause and cancel prints jobs remotely. There’s a firmware update available to add this feature to older Epsilon models.

The latest version gains an updated motor, the TMC2226, which is said to be silent and more efficient with better engine torque than the older version. These new motors generate very little heat so there’s no longer any need for a heatsink to cool them down.

There’s a new ventilation system, which extracts hot air flow from the interior and lowers internal pressure to let the interior absorb air from the outside. This gets around problems with the older system, where fans pushed cold air into the printer with hot air extracted through another grid, which could potentially cause turbulence.

BCN3D has designed a new main board specifically for the new printer that’s said to be more efficient than the previous approach of using commercially-available components in different areas of the printer. 

Finally, BCN3D has remodelled the frame, which is manufactured by Farguell, and is now more robust with better rigidity, ensuring the correct parallelism of the axes.
