Adphos curing for batteries

Many readers may be familiar with Adphos, which develops near infrared technology that can be used for drying some inkjet inks. The Adphos Group also includes Adphos Thermal Processing, which has developed a new drying solution for anode and cathode water-based and solvent-based coatings that can be used for producing battery cells.

Adphos Thermal Processing has developed a new electrode processing technology for battery production.

Currently most processes dry the electrode with a convection-based approach. However, Adphos has built on its advanced NIR (aNIR)-platform to develop the propriety aNIR-Battery Electrode Processing system that allows an electrode coating of up to 150µm thickness to be dried in ≤2s or for a coating thickness up to 400µm in ≤5s. Adphos says that this is ten times faster and with only a fraction of drying power, down to 10 percent of the existing convection based drying solutions.

Furthermore, this new approach doesn’t suffer from the issue of low coatings adhesion to the electrode substrates that can be caused by cracking or binder migration as is sometimes the case with other methods of fast drying such as infrared and laser-based heating/drying systems. In addition, the Adphos solution can be optimised for the specific solvent-based coating in use to minimise the amount of energy required for the final solvent treatment. 

Ultimately this should lead to lower costs for producing Li-Ion batteries, which power everything from computers to electric cars. You can find more information at adphos.com.
