OneVision to update Asura prepress software

OneVision is planning to release a new update to its Asura prepress software, which will include new trapping features.

The left-hand ‘a’ shows the printed result without trapping (with white edges) while the right-hand ‘a’ illustrates the printed result when trapping is used.

Asura started off as a sophisticated preflighting system but has evolved into a more functional part of a prepress workflow with a considerable level of automation. The upcoming 17.1 release will gain a new Trapping module, suitable for newspaper publishers as well as offset and digital printers and designed to enable printing without unsightly white spaces.

One of these options is for PDF trapping via the Asura plugin PlugCOMMERCIAL-PRINTin. This generates an additional layer to the original file, which allows the customer to validate the trapping result as needed and, if required, to make manual adjustments. There’s also In-RIP Trapping for halftone printing, which is carried out by the Asura plugin PlugRASTER-HDin and is thus incorporated into the prepress workflow.

There’s also a new barcode recognition feature to automate the checking of barcodes, which are mostly pre-inserted into documents as delivered. Asura can read barcode values and assign them to the appropriate barcode type, logging relevant data as it does so.

There are new features for archiving whereby images can now be extracted and stored in a durable archive in JPEG or TIFF formats. It can also output files that are compliant with PDF/A-2b for long-term archiving.

In addition, OneVision has also improved the ability to split and recombine files, which is common for printing multipage documents. Asura can also now flatten transparencies while retaining the cutting dies for label printing jobs.

You can license the articles from Printing and Manufacturing Journal to reproduce in other publications. I generally charge around £150 per article but I’m open to discussing this for each title, particularly for publishers that want to use multiple stories. I can provide high res versions of images for print publications.

I’m used to working with overseas publishers and am registered for VAT with the UK’s HMRC tax authority but obviously won’t charge VAT to companies outside the UK. You can find further details and a licensing form from this page, or just contact me directly here.
